i am being offered a used nokia n70 phone that has no battery & charger. so there is no way for me to identify if it is fake or not by keying in *#06# in stand-by mode to check. nor can I verify it's authenticity by checking on the sticker of the battery (since it has no battery).

What's this stupidity? The sticker is *under* the battery not on the battery. After all, it is more likely to have a counterfeit battery that to have a counterfeit phone.
Most likely the phone is legit, the chines clones are not that perfect, but you should not buy it unless there is a way to power it up, you can't otherwise know that it works or not.
