I ran over my phone (Nokia 6103) and placed the Sim Card in an old phone for now. I would like to get a phone without signing a two year contract or having to put a second mortgage on my house! Will any phone I buy (on ebay...etc) work with my service provider : Unicel (small town Oregon) ??

As long as the phone is compatible with your service provider, Sprint, Verizon, Cingular, Cellular One, At&T etc. You can put in your sim card. On ebay just look for compatible phones.

Providers usually lock the devices they sell to their network.

1. Make sure the device is not locked, or if it is locked, it should be locked to your provider. Providers have a unique code, so you don't want a phone that is locked to Cingular. When you put the SIM in, nothing will happen.

2. The device must be compatible with the bandwidth your provider offers. Example: You buy an 1800 Megahertz device in Europe and turn it on in your 1900 Megahertz service area. That's a no go. It's like trying to play a cd on a record player. In the US, most GSM company's use 1900, but 850 is starting to become available to GSM.
