Verizon Thunderbolt - What You Should Know Before You Buy

Article by Brad Erickson

When you're looking at smartphone features, many folks consider speed, that is the download speed, and the coverage as being two of the most important. The new Verizon Thunderbolt places well in these two categories making it a serious competitor in the ever expanding field of smartphones.

Download Speed

When accessing a mobile hot-spot connection it was possible to download a 5.1 MB file in 20 seconds and to upload a 16.4 MB photo album in only 47 seconds. The mobile sites for CNN and ESPN loaded in 3.6 seconds and 4 seconds respectively to the Thunderbolt phone itself. In addition the full site for CNET was loaded in a near record breaking 12 seconds. It should be noted that using the mobile hot-spot feature will adversely impact the battery charge. Recently, however, Verizon has begun promoting smartphone updates which will disable the phones' innate ability to use the hotspot function for free so they can begin charging a fee for this enhancement. As for apps, they downloaded and installed almost instantly. YouTube videos loaded within two seconds and were not interrupted during playback.

And yes, you can stream media from services such as TuneWiki and Bithop with no problem.

The ThunderBolt does a good job of seamlessly switching between 3G and 4G. That said, we do wish that there was a way to toggle between 3G and 4G like the Evo, because as we discuss later, using 4G comes at the cost of battery life.

Coverage

As of right now, July 2011, there are 39 markets which are covered by Verizon's 4G network plus there are more than 60 major airports that also provide service. The company plans to provide service across the country in the next year and to continue expanding coverage over the next three years. The goal is to have 285 million customers by the end of 2013.

Summary

Verizon has outdone itself with the introduction of the HTC Thunderbolt phone which is the fastest and most powerful phone in its lineup. The 4G speeds are mind-boggling and leave the competition in the dust. The browsing and and streaming experience take this smartphone to a whole new level. All of this power, however, creates a high demand on battery capacity which may be the phone's biggest weakness. But if you want speed you're at the right place, just remember to have a backup battery or an extended battery on hand.
