Multiple ways - only get a bigger battery or a second one if you are a heavy user.
When you aren't using them, turn off wifi/gps/bluetooth - that alone will save a ton of battery
Turn the screen brightness down to as low as you're comfortable using it at.
get a task killer from the market and use it once or twice a day.
Your vision is your fate
Turn the screen brightness down and set the back light so it goes off in like 5 or 10 seconds after not using it.

Avoid live wallpapers, disable background data (sending of info to and from accounts such as google or Facebook), deactivate data network mode whenever you're not going to use internet (it just turns off 3/4g), when charging allow it to charge fully (even if it looks like its almost done this is important). I've also heard that you shouldn't leave the charger plugged in when it doesn't need to be charged. Also make sure you don't leave any applications running, to end them hit the back button several times instead of the home button (referring mostly to internet here)

There is an extended battery available for the EVO. It is a thicker battery that requires a new back but you would get four hours more talk time in between charges because it is rated at 2700mah. The standard battery is 1500mah. You can find it here:
