The Nokia 6680 replaces the Nokia 6630, the 6681 replaces the Nokia 6600, and the 6682 replaces the Nokia 6620. Announced in February 2005, they reached the market in May 2005.

The primary difference between the 6680 and 6681 in technology terms is that the 6680 is a 3G device with a secondary camera on the front for video calls, and the 6681 is aimed at markets using the EDGE data standard. Significantly, the Nokia 6680 is the first Nokia phone to offer full built-in video calling capabilities, which should help with its acceptance by 3G operators. The 6630 also supported video calls, but did not have a camera on the front.

The 6680 remains a high-end 3G device. It is a smartphone offering office and personal management facilities, including Microsoft Office compatible software. Users should be aware that these phones do not take the standard RS-MMC card. They use Dual Voltage Reduced Size MMC (DV-RS-MMC) which are also marketed as MMCmobile. While these card have the same form factor as RS-MMC, the DV-RS-MMC have a 2nd row of connectors on the bottom. Make sure any upgraded card claims to support 1.8V in addition to 3.0V.

Both phones operate on GSM 900/1800/1900, with the 6680 operating additionally on UMTS 2100.

The Nokia 6682 is a variant of the 6681 designed for US markets, using GSM 850/1800/1900.
