The firmware update is an update to the phone's operating software. Usually it corrects bugs, but rarely speeds things up. For the specific changes, you will need to contact Nokia. While you're at it ask them as to whether or not you should update.

Attitudes towards updates change from company to company. It often varies depending on the software design and associated risks. I'll compare Dlink and SanDisk as examples

Dlink says don't do it unless you have problems. That is beacuse Dlink has little in terms of a back up. Thus, tehy don't want you to take the risk.

SanDisk on the other hand has usually 2 backups in case firmware update fails. They have Manufacturing mode (they don't talk about it) and a back up Recovery mode that can re-install the software. Thus, they tell you to do it and their software won't shut up till you do.

Check with what Nokia's attitude is. A simple email to tech support will answer this. Likely they want you to since their own software kepps telling you to, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
